Community encouraged to share stories and memories for new exhibition

People are being encouraged to bring their surfing and coastal stories and memories to the National Maritime Museum Cornwall to contribute to a new community co-created exhibition.

Following the launch of SURF!, a new exhibition that landed in March, the museum will be running Surfing Memories, an exhibition exploring individual memories and experiences of life in Cornwall's coastal communities and holidays spent here.

Whether you have albums full of family photographs taken on days by the beach, a story of a grand day out by the sea, or surfing momentos, the museum encourages you to get in touch.

The new display will open on 28th June, and will be 'a celebration of joy and laughter, hardships and hope'.

Dr Jenny Lee, Curator of Exhibitions and Special Projects explains: “This community exhibition will shift and change according to the submissions we receive over time – which is really exciting. SURF! takes visitors on a journey through surfing culture – the boards, the medals and the characters, but it’s been wonderful hearing visitors talking about their own seaside experiences as they walk around it. This community exhibition is an opportunity to tell all those personal stories, communicating our individual, deep-rooted connections with the Cornish coastline and what it means to us.”

If you have photos that you'd like to be included in the display, there will be drop-in sessions on Thursday 19th June, and 3rd, 10th and 17th July from 10am-midday, where stories and photos can be recorded and scanned. Otherwise, contributions can be made by filling out an online form: https://nmmc.co.uk/whats-on/surfing-memories/share-your-memories/
