Wadebridge Cricket Club to host Cornwall v Somerset game this August

Wadebridge Cricket Club have been chosen to host the showcase Somerset v Cornwall 50 over game on 4th August.

Gates open from 9am for an 11am start.

The annual fixture, part of a national ECB initiative, gives National Counties the opportunity to take on first-class opposition — and Cornwall’s finest will go head-to-head with professional players from Somerset in front of a home crowd.

The volunteer committee have been busy liaising with Cornwall Cricket and plans for the day are well underway. It will be a case of all hands on deck as players, committee members and friends of the club will be tasked with running everything from bars to barbecues, and raffles to refreshments. The hard working grounds team will be working to get the ground looking and playing at its best. Rotas have been drawn up and the excitement is building.

You may notice a few changes around the park over the few days preceding the match, the main one being a fence which will be erected around the ground.

The team ask the public to 'bear with us’ as they get ready to host this important game, and only hope to ‘make Wadebridge proud and put our cricket club on the map’.

Events such as these are vitally important in helping to support the running costs of the club, and enable the team to continue to field three senior teams, softball and hardball women’s cricket, three youth teams, a girls softball team and the ever popular All Stars and Dynamos for children aged 5 and over.

Cornwall Cricket Board Managing Director Joe Skinner said: “Since Cornwall and Somerset have been playing this fixture, it has always been a fun day, showing professional sport in Cornwall. Somerset have always provided a competitive side with some outstanding talent, last year Jack Leach and James Rew took the field. The date is getting close and we would encourage anyone who has not got their ticket yet to click the link and book up.
“The event reflects Cornwall Cricket Board’s ongoing commitment to growing the sport at all levels across the county — from grassroots to representative cricket. In partnership with the ECB, the Board supports inclusive opportunities for people aged five and up to get involved in the game.”

Car parking at the ground on the day will be for players and officials only, and there will also be limited disabled parking. Parking is being provided at the rugby car park (£5 per car), while Wadebridge School have also offered parking on their site and a free mini bus shuttle to the ground.
