New Life Church Bodmin celebrates 50 years of faith and community

From humble beginnings in a series of Gospel Outreach meetings to a transformed home on the edge of town, New Life Church Bodmin is celebrating 50 years of faith, friendship and service to the community.

The church will mark its golden anniversary with a celebration at the Shire House Suite on Saturday 17 October at 6pm, followed by special anniversary services on Sunday 18 October at 10.30am and 6pm at its Normandy Way premises. Everyone is welcome, although booking is required for Saturday’s event.

The story began in the summer of 1976, when posters appeared around Bodmin advertising a new Gospel Outreach. The meetings attracted large crowds, prompting experienced church planter John Hibbert and Keith Arnold to establish an Assemblies of God church.

Initially meeting in the Public Rooms, now home to the town’s cinema, the growing congregation soon moved to its own premises in Chapel Lane. Neville Downes became pastor in November 1977, helping nurture a church family that grew through Sunday School, children’s clubs and shared celebrations.

Among those who joined in the early days were Tony and Pam Birch, who remain active members today. Looking back, they recall the friendships, annual conventions and the challenge of outgrowing the original building. Above all, they remember what they describe as “God’s provision”, including unexpected gifts that helped the church through financially difficult times.

Today, pastor Steve Ovens, who has led the church for 14 years, is helping shape its next chapter. Recent renovations have transformed the current building at 18 Normandy Way, on the Walker Lines Industrial Estate, into a welcoming space for worship, meetings and community activities.

As the church celebrates five decades in Bodmin, its message remains one of gratitude for the past and hope for the future.
