Mark Thomas brings 40 years of political comedy to Cornwall

Mark Thomas has been standing up for 40 years – and he’s celebrating by taking a brand-new show on the road, with three Cornwall dates this autumn and winter.

One of the UK’s longest-standing alternative comedians, Thomas has spent four decades combining comedy, politics, campaigning and plenty of troublemaking. His new show promises a typically lively mix of jokes, rants, personal stories and political mayhem, as he attempts to make sense of the question many of us have been asking lately: “What the f*ck is going on?”

Thomas has certainly packed a lot into his 40 years at the microphone. He has won eight awards for performing and four for his human rights work, made six series of The Mark Thomas Comedy Product for Channel 4, written six books and five plays, and created five series of The Manifesto for BBC Radio 4.

His campaigning has been just as eventful. He has sued the police – and won – three times, held a Guinness World Record after organising 20 protests in 24 hours, walked 724km around the length of the Israel Wall in the West Bank and campaigned successfully on issues ranging from trade union recognition for cinema workers to changing the practices of multinational companies.

He has also started a comedy club in Palestine with Dr Sam Beale and collaborated with artist Tracey Moberly on two art exhibitions.

Now, Thomas brings his particular brand of political stand-up to Cornwall, with performances at Launceston Town Hall on Saturday 10 October, The Acorn in Penzance on Tuesday 1 December, and The Poly in Falmouth on Wednesday 2 December.

Expect a fast-paced evening of comedy, campaigning, outrageous stories and a state-of-the-nation broadcast from a performer who has made a career out of having fun – and upsetting the right people.
