'Flying the Flag for Local' as Falmouth celebrates its independent businesses

Falmouth is set to take part in the UK-wide Independents' Day campaign from the 4th-5th July, celebrating the unique independent businesses that are the 'lifeblood' of its vibrant high street.

Independents’ Day is a national initiative that shines a light on the importance of independent retailers, who make up around 65% of the UK’s 290,000 retail outlets. Here in Falmouth, the impact is even more pronounced. With over 75% of town centre businesses independently owned, Falmouth boasts one of the highest concentrations of independent retailers in the UK.

Interwoven throughout the town and sitting alongside established national names, Falmouth’s independent businesses infuse the high street with character, creativity, and authenticity. From fresh local bakeries and contemporary art galleries to family-run boutiques, bookshops and coastal lifestyle stores, these businesses reflect the entrepreneurial spirit and community values at the heart of Falmouth.

To mark this year’s campaign, seven local businesses are stepping forward to share their stories and showcase the value of shopping local. Each will take part in a series of digital and in-store activities, including Instagram takeovers, 'Meet the Maker' videos, and special in-store features. Shoppers will be invited to meet the faces behind the counters, explore the individuality of each store, and celebrate the spirit of independence that makes Falmouth so special.

“Falmouth has a dynamic and collaborative business community, where independent retailers, creatives, and service providers thrive side by side, nestled alongside national chains, which are also integral to the success of the town.” Mel Richardson said, spokesperson for Falmouth Business Improvement District (BID). ”It’s this diversity - across retail, hospitality, digital, and marine sectors - that gives our high street its distinctive character. Independent businesses are not only central to that mix, but they are also essential to the town’s success. They bring personality, local expertise, and a deep pride of place. Independents’ Day offers the perfect opportunity to celebrate their contribution and highlight the creativity, connection and resilience that make Falmouth’s high street truly unique."

Vicki Glaister, owner of independent business, Inspire Makers, and Falmouth BID board member added; "Independent businesses like Inspire Makers provide a platform to small, local creatives who might not otherwise have a space to showcase their work. At a time when UK high streets are under pressure, supporting independent businesses is more important than ever, it keeps money in the local economy and helps our town centre remain unique, resilient, and full of life."

The Falmouth businesses championing Independents' Day this year include lifestyle store The Oystercatcher, Church Street; art and stationery shop Salt Art Supply, Killigrew Street; sportswear, equipment and uniform shop Castle Sports and Uniform, Killigrew Street; contemporary and handmade art shop and workshop space Inspire Makers, High Street; boutique Pebble Cornwall, Church Street; lifestyle store Sophie Tilston, Arwenack Street; and dog-focused pet shop Southpaw Dog Store, Church Street.

The Falmouth Independents’ Day celebrations will run from Wednesday 2nd to Wednesday 9th July, with daily social content, business takeovers, and exclusive behind-the-scenes stories. You can watch 'Meet the Maker' videos by visiting https://www.falmouth.co.uk/independents-day/
