Family trio awarded Jamaica Inn shield
Three generations of golfers from the same family won a prestigious shield for their achievements at Launceston Golf Club recently.

The Branch family from Launceston, including grandfather Alan, father Steve and grandson Tyler, were presented with the historic shield by sponsors Jamaica Inn at the inn itself to bring 2025 to a successful conclusion. The shield has been a part of Launceston Golf Club’s repertoire of awards since 1972 when the Scottish author and then owner of Jamaica Inn, Alistair MacLean, originally presented the club with it. Fifty-four years on, it is still something the club continues to treasure, with numerous names and teams from over the years etched onto it.
Men’s captain Steve Hadfield said: “The family are all Launceston people. Steve, the son, is part of Launceston Community Fire Station; Alan, the grandfather, has lived and worked in the area for years and now volunteers for the golf club, and the grandson Tyler is also a big part of the club and was junior captain in 2023.
"We went up to Jamaica Inn, where manager Katie Marriott presented the shield to the family. We are glad to have continued sponsorship with Jamaica Inn."
This year is a big year for the club, as they continue preparations to celebrate their centenary year in 2027. They will be fundraising for Steve’s chosen charity Parkinsons UK, Lady Captain Phyll Ferguson’s chosen charity Kernow Connect - Action for Children, and Senior Captain David Green’s chosen charity Cystic Fibrosis Trust, as well as hosting the club’s open week in July and a whole host of golf and social events throughout the year.
The family defend the shield on 5th July, while next year the club will celebrate its centenary with a black tie event at Launceston Town Hall amongst a host of other activities and offerings, with further details to be announced in due course.
Launceston Golf Club welcomes new members, casual golfers, societies and entrants for open competitions, and offers food and drink in a relaxed setting overlooking the 18th green, as well as PGA qualified golf tuition for all abilities.
