Summer literary event to bring the women of the Wars of the Roses to life

Medieval history lovers, listen up! Annie Garthwaite, acclaimed author of Cecily and The King’s Mother, reveals the powerful women at the heart of the Wars of the Roses: a compelling story of mothers and sons, of maternal ferocity and female ambition during England’s bloody civil war.

This will be St Torney’s Church in North Hill’s very first literary event, taking place on the evening of Thursday, 14th August (7pm-8pm).

St Torney’s Church has its own links to the Wars of the Roses and the Plantagenets. The Courtenay family, the Earls of Exeter, held the local manor of Landreyne in the parish of North Hill. William Courtenay was to marry Katherine Plantagenet, the younger daughter of Edward IV. This local link makes St Torney's Church a very fitting venue for this special event.

Accounts of the Wars of the Roses are dominated by men – kings and kingmakers, traitors and tyrants. But the wars were equally shaped by women, driving the action and risking their lives to secure the throne for their sons. From Cecily Neville, dominant matriarch of the House of York, to Margaret Beaufort, mother of the Tudor dynasty, Annie traces the risks these women took and the prices they paid.

The King’s Mother gives us a fresh take on some of English history’s most enduring mysteries. For example, Cecily was the mother of Richard III - and did he really murder the princes in the tower?

Shrew Books of Fowey will have Annie’s books on sale at the church, which Annie will sign. Black Cat Books in Launceston will also be pleased to order copies of Annie's books.
