For the past 30 years BSCP has been bringing people together, providing welcoming spaces where people can access support, build friendships and feel part of their community.

Today, none of that would be possible without volunteers.

A few years ago, apart from the trustees, BSCP had very few volunteers. That all changed in 2019 with the launch of Bude Repair Café, where skilled local repairers began giving up their time each month to help people fix broken items. It highlighted just how generous the community could be.

Since then, volunteers have become part of everything the organisation does. They welcome customers at Berries, help in the kitchen, support community groups and events, lend a hand in the garden and much more. Last year alone, more than 50 volunteers gave over 3,500 hours of their time.

Volunteer Coordinator Kate said: “Everyone volunteers for different reasons, and that's what makes it so special. Some want to meet new people, some are building confidence after difficult times, and others are gaining skills for employment.

“One volunteer became involved through the Warm Room initiative. Today, he’s caretaker for both Neetside Community Centre and Berries. A paid role that grew directly from his volunteering.”

"Volunteering has opened my eyes and given me a positive outlook on life," he says. "It's given me purpose. The job came from volunteering at Berries. I've built my confidence, developed new skills and I'm happier than I've been in years."

“That's the real impact of volunteering,” Kate adds. “It doesn't just strengthen our charity; it changes lives.”
