Penguin Picks

At The Lost Penguin Wax Shack, Wayne and the team love records with character. Old favourites, overlooked gems or a new release that sends you somewhere completely unexpected. This time around, three very different albums make the cut.

DJ Shadow – Endtroducing
Moody, cinematic hip-hop built almost entirely from samples, Endtroducing..... is packed with dusty beats and a distinctive late-night atmosphere. Released in the 1990s, it remains one of the most influential albums of its kind and a record that rewards being played from beginning to end.

Ebo Taylor – Life Stories
A sun-soaked journey through Ghanaian highlife and Afrobeat, filled with warm guitars, punchy horns and irresistible grooves. Life Stories is a brilliant introduction to the music of Ebo Taylor and to one of West Africa’s most important and inventive musical voices.

The The – Soul Mining
Restless, intelligent and difficult to pin down, Soul Mining moves effortlessly between post-punk, synth-pop and soul. Big melodies sit alongside sharp lyrics and inventive production, creating one of the most distinctive British albums of the 1980s.

Three records, three completely different directions, and plenty to explore until the next batch of Penguin Picks. You’ll find Wayne and the team at The Lost Penguin Wax Shack, Belle Vue, Bude, EX23 8JL, with plenty more old favourites, overlooked gems and unexpected discoveries waiting in the racks.
