Crowds turn out for Launceston VJ Day street party

On Sunday, local residents flocked to the Square armed with sandwiches, flasks of tea, tins of cider and cakes to take part in Launceston’s VJ Day street party.

Marking 80 years since Japan surrendered to Allied Forces and thus brought about the end of global conflict, the event was a way to bring the community together, to remember the sacrifice of those who never returned from the wars overseas, and to remind one another of the strength of togetherness.

The party was organised by Launceston Town Council in conjunction with the Launceston branch of the Royal British Legion.

Launceston’s Town Crier, Rob Tremain, gave a fascinating talk on local poet Charles Causley’s (1917-2003) time on HMS Glory, and how he witnessed Japanese leaders preparing to surrender.

As ever, Launceston Town Band brought about high spirits with their renditions of wartime songs, and were complemented by the very talented Rachel Best from St Austell, who led the singing of classic songs of the era.

Cllr John Conway said: “It was well supported, and brought back memories for some. Thanks to all who made this such a memorable occasion!”
