Reflecting on 100 years of performance in Falmouth

With what is expected to be another sell-out performance coming to the Princess Pavilion stage this spring, their 2027 production already announced, and a year of celebrations to mark their centenary year, Falmouth Theatre Company has some exciting times ahead.

Falmouth Theatre Company has found a place for itself nestled within the thick anthology of the town’s past. Having performed for the very first time in 1926, it brings the same joy, fun and an ample amount of diversity to audiences 100 years on.

Originally known as Falmouth Amateur Operatic Society, before becoming Falmouth Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society in the 1980s, its latest name – Falmouth Theatre Company - now reflects what it does best: putting on quality theatre productions with an enthusiastic committee and talented cast. Its venues have ranged from the Grand Theatre, which was located on Market Street, to The Poly and the stage of the Princess Pavilion, its home today.

In 2023, Falmouth Theatre Company relaunched. Having taken a break during the pandemic, it was time for fresh ideas to blossom. With a new committee ranging in age, knowledge and abilities, the theatre was keen to throw itself back into the community and bring quality performances to the town again, as it had done all those decades before.

Tim and Boo McAuliffe, who have been involved in the theatre for around 40 years, felt that Falmouth Theatre Company deserved another chance to bring something special to the town. The theatre company’s first production since pre-pandemic times hit the Princess Pavilion stage in October 2023, with the cast performing Joseph and The Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, directed by Tim and Boo. Everyone was thrilled to be back after their break, and it was a special moment as the vibrant production was brought to life with modern technology not seen before at the Pavilion. The choice of production offered the community and cast a fun and inclusive experience for all ages, featuring well known songs and bright, colourful costumes.

Since then, Falmouth Theatre Company has blossomed with renewed energy, bringing quality live entertainment to the people of Falmouth well into the next 100 years.

Enthusiastic about getting involved in community events, they took part in the carnival last summer, attended Falmouth Pride, and have been recognised for their work with donations and awards.

This spring, the cast will bring The Sound of Music to the Princess Pavilion, which they last performed in 1999, and rehearsals are well underway. In addition to this, sights are already set on their production for 2027: Spamalot. Their 2025 show, Young Frankenstein, was a hit with audiences.

Committee member Hayley Leach said: “We’re really proud that Falmouth Theatre Company is still here, 100 years on. Our last shows were near sell-outs, and we’re so grateful to the people of Falmouth for all their support. It’s so lovely to see the smiles on the faces of people in the audience; all we want to do is put on fun and uplifting shows for everyone.

“It’s such a great community asset. You make such good friends doing it and, aside from the performing part, it’s lovely to feel so involved in the town.”

The theatre company has been rooted in many people’s lives for years. Generations of performers have passed through the stage doors, and the continued growth means that many more members – both on and off stage – are encouraged to get involved to carry on Falmouth Theatre Company’s legacy.

Falmouth Theatre Company will perform The Sound of Music at the Princess Pavilion from 29th April to 2nd May. To book tickets, or to find out how to join the cast, crew and committee, go to falmouththeatrecompany.com
