Atlantic String Orchestra Celebrates Two Decades of Music - Twenty Years in Harmony

A string orchestra based in Camelford, with five members from Wadebridge, is celebrating 'twenty years in harmony' this year. Here's their story...

In 2005 a group of keen string players in North Cornwall expressed the need for a string orchestra in the area and approached professional cellist and teacher Barbara Degener. With just six members (violins, a viola and two cellos) to start with, the Atlantic String Orchestra (ASO) was born.

Two decades later, this vibrant group has grown into a joyful ensemble of around fifteen musicians, united by their shared love of string music. With an age range currently spanning almost 60 years, the Atlantic Strings are a unique bunch who love to share their passion for string instruments. A double bass player is especially wanted and will be pampered!  The age range is from teenagers onwards: there is no age limit. There have been reports of players feeling rejuvenated.

Under the baton of Barbara, the amateur players bow their instruments every Wednesday during term time at Camelford 7-8.30 pm, filling the hall with laughter, concentration and the sound of string instruments.  The mainly adult players come from all varied musical backgrounds; some have been playing for many years and some have fulfilled a life-long dream and started learning later on in life. Their motivation to learn, combined with their youthful energy (whether in age or at heart) creates a fantastic blend of players who really enjoy working on pieces together.

As a professional cellist and teacher, Barbara has plenty of experience. She supports any technical issues together with her assistant Fergal Donnellon and leader Nel Freegard. Rehearsing together and working out difficult bits makes every session a meaningful group event. Trying to play right notes is overrated; every session is a journey about creating the energy of the music together and experiencing magical moments. The special spice is a good sense of humour.  The orchestra’s spirit lies in the blend of experience and enthusiasm, where every note, right or wrong, contributes to the joy of making music.

The repertoire is chosen to cover all levels of abilities as well as providing musical depth and, last but not least, to be rewarding and good fun. The music ranges from classical music from up to 300 years ago to modern arrangements of lighter music including film music from popular movies. About once a term the programme is celebrated with the community in very informal concerts where anybody is welcome.

The ASO has also performed at Wadebridge Music Festival. However, there is no room for competition in this group; it is a safe space for any bowed string player from about grade 2 or 3 to come together and connect through playing music together.

“Atlantic Strings is the most fabulous community orchestra. A wonderful supportive bunch of people united through the love of music and not worrying about wrong notes. If it wasn’t for them, I’m not sure I would have started playing again regularly," said one member.

Whether you’re a seasoned player or just beginning your orchestral musical journey, the Atlantic String Orchestra welcomes you with open arms, and a good sense of humour.
