National Highways will begin work on Saturday, 5 September 2026, with the scheme expected to continue until March 2027.

The improvements are designed to make the stretch of the A30 safer and will include changes to junctions and visibility, improvements to traffic signs, road markings and road studs, and upgrades to safety barriers.

Overnight closures to start the work

The first phase of the work will require full overnight closures of the A30 between Kennards House and Five Lanes from 9pm to 6am, running from 5 to 10 September.

From Monday, 7 September, there will be one lane open in each direction between Five Lanes and Kennards House, with a 50mph speed limit in place for the duration of the scheme.

National Highways says free vehicle recovery will also be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week while the works are taking place.

Further full carriageway closures, junction closures and temporary traffic lights will be required at various stages of the project.

Access will be maintained for emergency service vehicles throughout the works.

Drivers urged to plan ahead

Motorists are being advised to allow extra time for journeys, with National Highways warning that delays are likely, particularly during peak periods, on Fridays and at weekends.

There will be further overnight and full-road closures as the work progresses. Dates for these closures, along with diversion routes, will be published by National Highways.

Drivers are being asked to follow the signed diversion routes rather than relying on satnavs, which may attempt to send traffic along unsuitable or congested alternative routes.

The scheme forms part of National Highways' ongoing programme to improve road safety and reduce the number of people injured on the country's roads.
