Wreckers Music: Moving into the future

There are some exciting changes happening in Launceston’s music community, with an expanded project broadening its offering to musicians, venues, and audiences alike.

A project of ALFCIC, Launceston Folk Club launched in 2023, harnessing the power of music and community to bring folk musicians from Cornwall, Devon and the wider UK, to perform in Launceston and other parts of Cornwall. Launceston is modelled on Hitchin Folk Club in Hertfordshire, a club that played a huge part in organiser Emma’s life and musical development when she was growing up. Hitchin Folk Club continues to thrive today, with people flocking to the town from far and wide to experience the music.

This is the vision that Emma always had for Launceston, and what is clear to her is that folk music is indeed ‘alive and well’, with generations of new artists rising up, creating their own new sounds, while honouring traditional folk music.

With continued growth over the last couple of years, incorporating a diverse range of genres, she realised that perhaps there was another way to support the wider local music scene, while allowing Launceston Folk Club to retain its own identity.

As an organisation run solely by volunteers with an aim of keeping costs to an absolute minimum, resources are limited. Emma knew things had to change to future-proof the folk club and Launceston’s ever growing music scene.

Out of this, Wreckers Music was born. It made sense to put all music related activity under one banner and, with Wreckers Radio already established - a station run by Launceston Folk Club in conjunction with Cornwall Folk Festival - it offered the perfect opportunity to do this, supporting independent musicians and grassroots venues West of the Exe, regardless of genre. Launceston Folk Club will retain its own identity as a folk club, while other genres and events that fall outside of the folk umbrella will fall under Wreckers Music.
