Wine and beer shop opens in Launceston to great local and visitor support

Nestled in a historic building in Launceston’s Chings Alley, the Chings Alley Wine and Beer Cellar is serving up some of the best tipples hailing from Cornwall and the South West.

Opening just before Christmas, the Cellar is the brainchild of Martyn Knight, with support from his daughter Tammy Nutley. On being asked for their opinion on what the long-empty premises in Chings Alley could be used for, Martyn and Tammy were immediately struck with an idea. Tammy said: “As soon as we entered and looked at the amazing structure of the building, we just looked at each other and said, ‘Wine!’. It just felt right. A little bit later we looked up the history of the building and then realised that it was built by the Ching family as a wine store, so we then felt it was fate!”

Having faced a small amount of opposition to start with, the pair adjusted their ideas from a small wine bar with some seating to an off licence shop and friendly, safe space for the community. Whether you’re looking for that perfect bottle to go with dinner, or simply want to pop in for a natter, everyone is welcome.

Chings Alley Wine and Beer Cellar stocks a range of drinks that truly champion our corner of the world. There are beers from two local micro breweries, Launceston-based Firebrand Brewing Co and Holsworthy Ales; ciders from two local cider makers, Crackington Cider Co, and Sam’s Cider, and wines that have been exclusively put together by Sovereign Wines of Tavistock, featuring flavours from around the world. There is also a dedicated display of award-winning wines from the Tamar Valley Vineyard.

So, what should we all be drinking this spring? Tammy added: “Where to start?! We have had an amazing response to our white port from the oldest port house in the world. We recommend our great range of alcohol-free drinks, and for wines, we suggest popping in to go through the varied tasting notes.”

As part of the Cellar’s offerings, they hope to offer selected tastings on the first Saturday of each month, 12pm-6pm. For now, they are opening their doors to people to browse leisurely, have a chat and enjoy a relaxed, friendly space.
