The Pearl Exchange: Five Years of Creativity, Connection and Community in Bude

In the heart of Bude, aremarkable community has grown around a simple but powerful idea: thatcreativity, connection and kindness can transform lives. Over the past five years,The Pearl Exchange (TPE) has become a welcoming haven for young adults, offering a place to learn, create, share experiences and find support.

Founded in 2020 following the tragic loss of 19-year-old Pearl Bamford, The Pearl Exchange was created by Pearl’s parents, Rose and Johnny, after experiencing first-hand the challenges many young people face when accessing mental health support. Their vision was to create something different, an inclusive and inspiring space where people could build confidence, discover new passions and feel less isolated.

What began with fundraisingfeasts, community events and a one-week taster programme has grown into anaward-winning charity with a year-round programme of workshops, events, counselling and opportunities centred around four key areas: work, wellness, musicand art.

Based on Broadclose Hill in the centre of Bude, the space brings together young adults and artists, makers, musicians and wellbeing practitioners from the community, creating opportunities to learn new skills, explore creativity and build lasting friendships.

As the charity celebrates its fifth anniversary in 2026, Managing Director Fliss Loxley reflects on the journey so far.

“What started as an idea, followed by a one-week taster and an eight-week pilot, has grown into something we could never have imagined. Five years on, I'm incredibly proud of how our programme continues to grow and evolve.”

For Fliss and the team, the greatest reward comes from seeing the difference TPE makes to people’s lives, whether helping someone return to employment, discover a new creative outlet or simply find somewhere they feel they belong.

“Just last week I spent a couple of hours working one-to-one with someone to create a CV. A few days later, they got their first job in several years. Moments like that remind us why we do what we do. Seeing the confidence, hope and opportunities The Pearl Exchange creates is, without question, the most rewarding part of what we do.”

“One of the things I'm most proud of is that TPE really is for everyone. You don't have to be in crisis to come to us, but if you are, that's absolutely okay too. Some people join us because they're feeling isolated, some want to learn something new, others are looking to get back into work or simply want to meet new people.”

That sense of belonging is something many beneficiaries describe as life-changing. After returning to Bude following university and employment elsewhere, Will was looking for a way to reconnect and meet people his own age. Through The Pearl Exchange, he found a welcoming space to make friends, and feel part of the community once again.

“I am just super grateful to have The Pearl Exchange here in Bude,” says Will. “They are the figurative heart in this; my hometown.”

For Keleigh, the vital support during one of the most difficult periods of her life, helped her rediscover confidence, creativity and a sense of self.

“I started to attend on a regular basis at a time of severe crisis in my life and it has played one of the largest roles in bettering myself as a person. Naturally, The Pearl Exchange helped me to make special friends and brought me back home to my open, creative and expressive self.”

At a time when loneliness and mental health challenges continue to affect communities everywhere, The Pearl Exchange is a shining example of what can be achieved when people come together with compassion and a shared belief in supporting one another.
