Step into Bodmin's colourful past

Bodmin Riding & Heritage Festival is set to return in 2026, shining a light on the town’s absorbing past over a weekend in July.

This ancient Cornish festival, unique to Bodmin, is set to bring with it a vibrant celebration of local history, community spirit and tradition.

With festivities beginning on Friday 3rd July, the streets of Bodmin will come alive with a feast of local food, drink and ‘Riding Ale’ to get the weekend’s celebrations off to an exciting start.

On Saturday 4th July, the town centre will be closed to traffic as community groups, artisans and local businesses line the streets with colourful stalls and displays. One of the day’s highlights will be the traditional procession, led by Bodmin Town Band and local children performing the furry dance to the age-old Riding Tune.

Everyone is encouraged to dress in Medieval costume, which will bring the ancient atmosphere to life, and there will be a rich programme of entertainment throughout the day, from music and dance, historical re-enactments and battles, craft stalls, children’s activities, and the ever-popular hunt for the legendary Bodmin Beast.

Deeply rooted in local heritage, Bodmin Riding & Heritage Festival commemorates important historic events: the restoration of the bones of St Petroc after they were stolen, the Cornish Prayer Book Rebellion of 1549, and the hanging of Mayor Nicholas Bowyer— events that played a significant role in shaping the town’s story.

With its blend of history and family-friendly fun, the 2026 festival promises to be a wonderful celebration for residents and visitors alike.
