Lewannick May Day celebrations return
Lewannick’s much-loved annual May Day celebrations will return on Monday 4th May, with events kickstarting at 1pm.

May Day is an occasion in the spring calendar that is celebrated up and down the country. Here in Cornwall, our traditions often relate back to ancient Celtic celebrations, including the festival of Beltane. Traditionally, it celebrates the coming of summer and, historically, featured feasts and dancing in towns and villages, as well as appointing two people in the community to lead the celebrations as ‘Lord’ and ‘Lady’. Moving into the Victorian era, only one girl would be selected as the ‘May Queen’, dressed in all-white with a flower crown placed upon her head.
In Lewannick, what started as a small group of children doing some dancing over 30 years ago, is now a full afternoon of fun and games, attended by hundreds each year. With food, shopping and entertainment for all ages, it’s an event that local people rely on as they get ready to honour the May Day traditions.
Thanks to Horizon Home Improvements’ sponsorship, there have been some amazing spectacles over the years - Spiderman ascending the climbing wall was a huge favourite!
Organisers have worked hard over the years to put on a brilliant day for the whole family in the charming village of Lewannick, and the event has helped to raise thousands of pounds for local community projects and groups. Every year, organisers pick a group or project in the village to support, and funds have supported new community marquees, barbecues, play equipment, tables for ‘stay and play’, and the benches in the village green.
Organiser Sarah Fry said: “It’s lovely to see them all being used by so many people, all year round.”
This year’s plans are already in the works, with stall holders making sure their pitch is booked, and makers, crafters, bakers and artists encouraged to get involved. Sarah added: “There is so much talent in this little corner of the country, and it’s great to be able to offer a platform for them to showcase and sell their wares.”
