Launceston Poetry Festival a great success

Last weekend, The Charles Causley Trust held a series of workshops, events and free community activities for the inaugural Launceston Poetry Festival.

From Friday, 30th May to Sunday, 1st June, Launceston became a hive of activity, bustling with literature-lovers, scribblers of poetry, and enthusiasts of poet Charles Causley, whose hometown of Launceston helped to inspire some of his finest work.

With comedian Frank Skinner and poet Ella Frears as headliners for the weekend, and a whole host of names from the arts and literature world joining them, the festival gave the community the chance to indulge in some wonderful events, from readings and discussions, to performances and entertainment. Free community activities such as a picnic in the castle grounds, inspirational town walks, writing mentorship and art exhibitions showed just how much talent and wonder is on our doorstep.

The town was a hive of activity over the weekend

Following a difficult year for the Trust in 2024, when they had to cancel the Causley Festival of Arts and Literature due to lack of funding, the Launceston Poetry Festival has proven that the passion for reading, writing and creating is very much still alive here in Launceston, and there are hopes that the event will pave the way for future events in the town, making the arts accessible to all.

The Causley Trust works to preserve the life and work of Charles Causley, while opening up opportunities for up-and-coming writers and creatives. With annual poetry competitions, writing residencies at Cyprus Well - Causley’s former home - and guidance and support for writers, their mission is to put Launceston on the map.

David Devanny, Causley Trust Chairman, said of the festival: "We're so proud the inaugural Launceston Poetry Festival was such a tremendous success! Thanks to our generous sponsors, volunteers, and partnership with Guillemot Press we saw dozens of poets and several hundred keen poetry fans visiting Launceston, as well as local poets taking to the stage and enjoying workshops, readings, the town band and youth drama group, a packed out open mic and headline performances from Frank Skinner and folk singer Jackie Oates. The local community and national poetry community joined together to celebrate creativity in honour of Charles Causley, Launceston's poet.
