Lanstefan Arts: A space for art, spirituality and conversation

From the mermaids of the north coast and battles between giants, to drizzle- drenched figures haunting Bodmin Moor, Cornwall is a county rooted with folklore and mystery, something that a group of locals are hoping to tap into with a new arts space in the heart of Launceston.

Lanstefan Arts is a new space for creative, spiritual souls who are interested in exploring the connections between community, art and folklore.

The space belongs to Simon Costin, a founding member of the Museum of British Folklore and custodian of the Museum of Witchcraft in Boscastle, who wanted to provide a space for creative residencies, so groups and organisations can run workshops and events for those with curious minds.

One such organisation is Meet Us at Lanstefan, with Fedde Bonadea and Laurie Gutteridge at the helm, who are offering workshops and gatherings centred around Cornish culture and wisdom, spirituality and wellbeing from the space.

Simon is passionate about Cornish folklore and arts. He said: “I've had this space with my partner for four years, which we used mainly for storage while our house locally was being renovated. We always knew we wanted to open a combined art space for the intrigued and curious. We want to try to build this community at this end of Cornwall, and I’m really keen to start pulling contributions from our network of local contacts to enhance it. There is already a lot of interest in folklore, with the fantastic folk club here; I’d love to see the return of the floral dance here in Launceston, for instance.”

For the next few years, Fedde and Laurie will be hiring the space for various talks and workshops.

Fedde added: "We plan a series of talks about land and culture. The countryside is our muse; providing wisdom and tradition to accompany us, lifelong. After all, Launceston - the capital of old Cornwall - sits on the edge of the moor, complete with all its mystery and stories.”

Upcoming events include Witch Choir with Holly Anne Coles on 25th June, a guided singing experience, and Wheel of the Year: Midsommar Ritual with Rebecca Beattie.
