Kindness: ‘A wonderful, underrated gift we give to others’

As we step into spring to brighter and longer days, I wanted to acknowledge the kindness we have experienced at Concern Wadebridge at The John Betjeman Centre, writes manager Emma Burt.

It started a couple of months ago when we began receiving a regular anonymous donation from a lovely person who asked us to give a different person a free meal every week. The impact of this has been so heartwarming.

We have chosen regular customers and volunteers who have supported us in different ways and were able to help a homeless woman who had slept on our platform the night before in storms. We kept her warm, charged her phone, fed her and gave her hot drinks all day until she caught a bus to her next destination. A customer bought her breakfast and another brought her treats; she was so grateful.

We think it’s such a lovely thing to do that we have been asking people to nominate customers for a free meal- however much we pride ourselves on knowing our customers, sometimes we don’t always know what they are going through or if they have done acts of kindness that we might not have been aware of.

Nominations don’t have to be for people going through a hard time, it could be because someone has done a good turn and it’s a way of showing appreciation, or someone who just brightens your day by always saying hello!

We will continue to do this as long as we can as I think it’s so special and it’s giving us so much joy.

Wadebridge is such a fortunate town and I feel so lucky to be part of its community with our wonderful centre!

If you wish to nominate someone for a free meal, coffee or a slice of cake OR if you wish to make a donation towards this project, we are calling it Betjeman Bites: Nourished by Kindness.
