'Kindness breeds kindness'

Tucked away just a stone’s throw from the main hustle and bustle of Wadebridge, Hamilton’s Yard is a friendly, welcoming corner of the town, where business owners Jill, Sue and Steph are trying to make a difference.

When they’re not serving customers, Jill, Sue and Steph offer an inviting and inclusive space for the community to enjoy. As long as the weather is dry, you will find a large table top sale in Hamilton’s Yard, where everything is just £1, and where funds directly impact individuals in need. People are invited to pop by for a chat, a coffee and a bargain hunt, and to seek a listening ear, if they need it.

Jill and Sue at Hamilton's Yard, where they hold a £1 bargain sale every week to raise money for people in the community.

Since first setting up the fundraising table a year ago, the ladies have raised more than £2,000 in all, with money being used to buy a specialist chair for an autistic child, fund an important dental appointment, as well as helping people access electric wheelchairs or mobility scooters. They also helped to organise vouchers for food and Christmas gifts last year.

What started as a way for people in the community to stop by, have a coffee and a chat, soon turned into something bigger as the Hamilton’s Yard ladies realised there were many vulnerable people slipping through the net. Cllr Robin Moorcroft also heard of the work being done at Hamilton’s Yard, and was quick to praise this small but mighty group of fundraisers.

“We’ve raised over £2,000 in a year,” Jill said. “This is a safe place; we’re very inclusive here, and are willing to help anybody and everybody. We will never turn anybody away.

“If people have problems, they can come here in confidence and mention it to us, and we will see how we can help.”

The ladies hope their efforts will only add to the strong sense of community spirit already established here in Wadebridge. Jill added: “If you go towards people with an open heart, they’ll accept you. All I’ve ever found here is kindness. Kindness breeds kindness: that’s our ethos.”

If you enjoy a bargain, pop along to Hamilton’s Yard, where the fundraising table is set up every day from Tuesday to Saturday, 10am-3pm, as long as the weather is dry. Jill, Sue and Steph are always ready to listen to anyone in need.
