Celebrating Cornish crafts and produce

Whether you’re looking for quality ingredients for your summer dishes, fresh bread and pastries for breakfast in the garden, beers to enjoy with friends by the beach, or gifts for loved ones, Discovery Market Falmouth has everything you need, right on your doorstep.

Local food, drink and crafts is the main focus of the market - with an emphasis on ‘local’. The ethos of the event is to launch new and existing Cornish businesses into the spotlight, ensuring residents can support small and go home with quality products, every time. It also happens to be a cracking way to spend a morning, offering everything from jewellery, art and gifts to fresh produce and crafts, while encouraging locals to engage with their community and the business owners who live and work in the area.

We spoke to Rebecca Ready of the Discovery Market team on the first day of the trading season in April, to see why people should support their local market.

“We try to showcase as many local small businesses as we can,” she said. “It started as a plastic free market, so it was all about marine conservation and awareness, but then we found it more difficult to invite local food and drink suppliers due to packaging and takeaway materials, though many of them are already very environmentally conscious. Though it is a little different now, we still have a heavy ethos of being sustainable.”

Supporting small independents and giving them a platform to share their makes, bakes and goods with the community, is why the market is so important. Rebecca continued: “The small business push is really integral to Cornwall.”

This is Discovery Market’s third year in Falmouth, and this summer will see a rotation of Cornish musicians who will be accompanying the markets each week.

Discovery Market takes place every Thursday and Saturday on Events Square. Find them on social media, @discoverymarket_ or visit www.discoverymarket.co.uk.
